In the story of Luke 18:19 Jesus says: ‘Why you call me good, no one is good except God alone.’
Jesus made a claim here that is ofter confused or twisted by many false denominations, to actually atack the deity of Christ.
Jesus made an ultimatum here for this rich man. The point that He is making is – or you will consider who I really am, or you will reject it.
So why you call me good, who I am for you? And then he tells him, there is none good, but God alone.
The story is connected with the eternal life, then Jesus said to him– give up on your possesions and come, follow me.
He emphasizes the fact that keeping commandments is not what’s going to save you.
It’s about to giving up everything for Him, that will lead to eternal life. This rich man didn’t want to leave all that he has and go after Jesus. He wasn’t ready for that.
And then disciples asked Jesus: ‘Who then can be saved?’ It seems humanly impossible.
Jesus replied – With man it is impossible, you are right.
But not with God. With God all things are possible.
So Jesus agrees, it is impossible to obtain salvation on your own.
In the same chapter verse 45 – Jesus is saying that He didn’t came to be served, but to serve and to give His life for many. In other words, Christ is claiming to be able to do what only God could do.
King David said: “Lord Himself will radeem Israel from all their sins.” Psalm 130:7
When a person dies in unbelief, they are dying in their sins. They die in the flesh, because they were never born again – of the Spirit.
Then you shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32
